Overview: 

One of the key objectives of BEEP is to help Indian builders and developers in adopting new processes, tools and technologies for designing energy-efficient buildings. BEEP provides the expertise of senior Swiss and Indian architects and engineers to assist in developing the energy concept for selected commercial design projects, promoted by private and public sector builders and developers. The support that BEEP offers includes conducting an integrated design charrette (4 day design workshop) and continued technical support till the schematic design is achieved.

Till November 2013, 6 commercial building projects (6 private sector and 2 public sector projects) were selected for the charrette assistance. BEEP provided technical inputs through charrette for improving their energy performance by 25 - 47%.

Strategies recommended during the charrette

  • Dry stone cladding with air gap and insulated glazing to reduce heat gain inside the building.
  • Non-occupied spaces (like staircase, machine rooms, toilets etc.) on the south-west face of the block.
  • Free cooling, incorporating the use of ambient air for cooling whenever suitable.
  • Heat recovery wheel (effectiveness 75%) to reduce the energy consumption for cooling the fresh air.
  • Use of high performance water cooled chillers with better part load performance instead of air-cooled chillers. Automated control on the chiller to raise the chilled water temperature (gliding chilled water temperature) as per the cooling load.
  • Solar hot water generation for kitchen.
  • Renewable electricity generation through roof-top solar photovoltaics

  • 150 mm AAC (Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) blocks was proposed to replace 230 mm brick wall

  • Installing the heat recovery wheel of effectiveness of 0.75 (sensible and latent) in all AHU units
